Larry Satek, co-owner of the winery with his wife, Pam, first hired Tri-State University students to pick grapes but after two years ran into problems dealing with the students’ schedules.
He talked with area apple growers…[and approached the Amish about harvesting grapes].
“They want to make sure when their children go somewhere, there will be no undesirable social influence – where the children are going,”
From 8 to 10 a.m., youths ages 13 to 20 worked at the winery during harvest season. And while they clipped the grape clusters from the vines, Satek says, they sang, they yodeled, they bantered with each other and with the full-time employees. …
