Herald-Republican, Tuesday, August 31, 2004Satek ranks as top winery, wins top honors in annual competition.
FREMONT – Satek Winery near Fremont edged into the company of top ranked Indiana wineries with two gold medal wins at the 2004 Indiana State Fair Indianapolis International Wine Competition this month.
The vintner amassed 21 medals in the nation’s third largest wine competition, more than any other Indiana winery. In addition to the golds, winery owners Pam and Larry Satek earned seven silver and 12 bronze medals.
Dual honors came in the form of the gold medal and Best in Class for Satek’s homegrown DeChaunac, a dry red wine made from grapes grown in the family’s Lake James vineyard. Imported grapes went into the making of Satek’s gold medal-winning Riesling.
The winery also tied for first place with Huber Wmery in the Indiana Governor’s Cup competition. Although Huber eventually claimed the prize in a subsequent tie-breaker, this marked the first year that a winery other than Huber, Oliver or Chateau Thomas finished first in the regular competition, the Sateks said. …
This year’s competition included over 3,600 entries from 17 countries.
